Privacy Policy
Black History Facts
Last updated: 15 October 2026
This policy explains what personal information we collect when you use the Black History Facts app and this website, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have. We've tried to write it in plain English.
The short version
- You can read Black History Facts without an account.
- If you create an account, we hold your email address, a display name and, if you play the Premium quizzes, your scores.
- We don't show adverts, sell your information or track you across other companies' apps and websites. The app doesn't track how you use it.
- Your saved facts, reading history, notes and Parent/Teacher mode settings stay on your device. We never receive them.
- You can delete your account in the app at any time.
1. Who we are
Black History Facts is run by Oye Ventures Ltd ("we", "us" or "our"), 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2H 9JQ. Registered in England and Wales.
We are the "controller" of your personal information under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).
You can contact us about anything in this policy at hello@blackhistoryfactsapp.com.
2. The information we collect
If you use the app without an account
- Our servers: when the app loads facts, essays, quotes, quizzes and photos, our servers receive the request in the normal way. Our server logs record which part of the service was requested, when, and whether it worked. They don't record your IP address or who you are. Our hosting provider may record IP addresses briefly in its own security logs.
- RevenueCat, our subscription provider, gives your device an anonymous ID. This lets the app show you Premium plans and prices in your currency. RevenueCat receives that ID, your IP address and basic information about your device and the app, such as the operating system, app version and country.
- Clerk, our sign-in provider, starts up in the background so that sign-in is ready if you want it. Clerk receives your IP address and basic information about your device.
If you create an account
You don't have to create an account. Without one, you can't buy Premium, play the Ultimate Leaderboard or take part in Versus challenges.
- Email sign-up: your email address and a password. Your password is handled by our sign-in provider, Clerk, and is never visible to us. We also send you a one-time code to confirm your email address.
- Sign in with Apple or Google: the information Apple or Google shares with us, which can include your name, email address and profile picture. If you use Apple's "Hide My Email", we receive a private relay address instead of your real one.
- An account ID that links your account to your subscription and quiz scores.
- Sign-in records, kept by Clerk to protect your account: when you signed in, the device and browser used, and an approximate location worked out from your IP address.
Your display name
Your account has a display name. New accounts get a name such as "Explorer 4821", and you can change it in the app at any time. Please don't use your full name or anything that identifies you if you'd rather stay anonymous. We may change or remove display names that are offensive or impersonate someone.
Who can see your display name:
- Ultimate Leaderboard: anyone using the app can see your display name next to your scores. You can turn off "Show my scores on the leaderboard" in the You tab.
- Versus challenges: the other player sees your display name.
Quizzes (Premium)
- Ultimate Leaderboard: your score, the number of questions, how long you took, the difficulty level and the date.
- Versus challenges: the challenge code, the questions, each player's score and time, and who took part. The other player sees your display name and result.
Subscriptions
Premium is bought through the Apple App Store or Google Play, and Apple or Google takes the payment. We never receive your card or bank details.
To check that your subscription is active, we use RevenueCat. RevenueCat receives details of your purchases, linked to your account ID: which plan you bought, the price and currency, purchase and renewal dates, and whether it is active. It also receives the device information described above. RevenueCat gives us summary reports about subscriptions, such as how many people subscribed in a month.
When you contact us
If you email us, we receive your email address, your message and anything else you choose to include. For example, you might send screenshots or details of your device.
Kept only on your device
The following are stored in the app on your phone and are never sent to us:
- the facts and quotes you save
- your reading history
- your private notes on essays
- your personal best scores for the Quick Quiz
- your settings (such as theme and animations)
- Parent/Teacher mode, its age band and PIN
- copies of content saved for offline reading
Deleting the app removes them. Some are also cleared when you sign out.
What we don't collect
We don't collect your precise location, your contacts, your photos or anything from your microphone or camera. We don't collect advertising identifiers.
We don't use advertising tools, or analytics tools that track how you use the app. We don't build a profile of your interests.
3. How we use your information, and our legal reasons
UK data protection law requires a legal reason ("lawful basis") for each use of your information.
| What we do | Information used | Lawful basis |
|---|---|---|
| Deliver the app's content to your device | Technical information sent with each request | Legitimate interests: running the service you asked for |
| Show Premium plans and prices, and get sign-in ready, before you have an account | Anonymous RevenueCat ID, IP address, device information | Legitimate interests: letting you see what Premium costs and sign in when you choose |
| Create and run your account, and sign you in | Account information, sign-in records | Contract: providing the service you signed up for |
| Provide Premium and check your subscription | Purchase information | Contract |
| Understand how subscriptions are doing, using summary reports | Purchase information | Legitimate interests: running the business |
| Run the leaderboard and Versus challenges | Display name, quiz scores and results | Contract |
| Keep the service secure, and prevent abuse, cheating and offensive display names | Sign-in records, server logs, quiz scores, display names | Legitimate interests: protecting you, other players and the service |
| Reply to your messages, fix reported errors and handle complaints | Your messages and email address | Legitimate interests, or legal obligation where the law requires a reply |
| Meet our legal obligations | Any relevant information | Legal obligation |
We don't send marketing emails. The only emails you'll get from us are ones needed to run your account, such as sign-in codes, or replies to messages you've sent us.
We don't make decisions about you based solely on automated processing that have legal or similarly significant effects.
4. Who we share your information with
We only share personal information as described here. We never sell it.
Service providers who work for us. These providers handle information on our behalf, under contracts that require them to protect it and use it only to provide their service to us:
- Clerk, Inc. (United States): sign-in and account management
- RevenueCat, Inc. (United States): subscription management
- Replit, Inc. (United States): hosting for our servers and database
- Cloudflare, Inc. (United States): hosting for this website and our domain name
- Our email provider: for messages you send us
Apple and Google. When you buy a subscription or sign in with Apple or Google, they handle your information under their own privacy policies.
People using the app.
- Your display name and scores appear on the Ultimate Leaderboard, unless you turn this off.
- Your display name and results are shown to the other player in a Versus challenge.
When the law requires it. We may share information:
- if the law requires us to, for example in response to a valid legal request
- to protect the rights, safety or property of our users, ourselves or others
- if the business is transferred to a new owner, who would have to keep honouring this policy
5. International transfers
Some of our service providers are based in the United States, so your information may be processed there. When it is, we rely on the protections UK law requires. These are the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework (where the provider is certified), or the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. You can ask us for more details.
6. How long we keep your information
- Your account, display name, quiz scores and challenges: until you delete your account. If you delete it, we delete your leaderboard entries and the challenges you created. In challenges you joined, your name is removed.
- Sign-in records: kept by Clerk while your account exists, and deleted with your account. The only exception is where Clerk must keep a record for security or legal reasons.
- Purchase records: Apple and Google keep their own records of your purchases. RevenueCat keeps transaction records while your account exists. When you delete your account, we ask RevenueCat to delete its record too.
- Anonymous RevenueCat IDs for people who never create an account are kept by RevenueCat as part of its service records.
- Server logs: used only for security and fixing problems. Our hosting provider deletes them automatically, and we don't keep copies.
- Emails you send us: up to two years after we've dealt with your message, unless we need them for longer to deal with a legal claim.
7. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us to:
- give you a copy of the personal information we hold about you
- correct information that is wrong or incomplete
- delete your information
- restrict how we use it, or object to our using it on the basis of legitimate interests
- give you your information in a format you can take elsewhere ("portability")
To make a request, email hello@blackhistoryfactsapp.com from the address on your account if you can. We'll reply within one month, and won't charge you. We may need to confirm your identity first.
Deleting your account: in the app, open the You tab, scroll to Account and tap Delete account. Or email us and we'll do it for you. Deleting your account doesn't cancel a subscription. Cancel it in your App Store or Google Play settings first.
Complaints: if you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, please tell us first at hello@blackhistoryfactsapp.com. We'll acknowledge your complaint within 30 days, look into it and let you know the outcome without undue delay. You also have the right to complain to the UK's data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk), at any time.
8. Children
Black History Facts is a general-audience app. Accounts are for people aged 13 and over. In the UK, 13 is the age at which you can agree to an online service using your information.
Parent/Teacher mode lets an adult show child-friendly versions of our facts to a child. In this mode:
- the app hides sign-in, purchases, the leaderboard, Versus, sharing and external links
- the mode's settings stay on the device, and the mode sends us nothing about the child
- the app still sends the ordinary technical information described in section 2, as it does for any reader without an account
We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you think a child under 13 has created an account, please contact us and we'll delete it.
9. Keeping your information safe
We protect your information in several ways:
- All traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted.
- Passwords are handled by Clerk, so we never see or store them.
- Access to our systems is restricted.
- Premium access is checked on our servers, not on your device.
No system is perfectly secure, but we take care to protect your information. We'll tell you, and the regulator where required, if a breach puts you at risk.
10. Cookies and storage on your device
The app doesn't use cookies for advertising or analytics. It stores the information listed under "Kept only on your device" so that it works properly.
This website doesn't use cookies, analytics or advertising tools. Cloudflare, which hosts it, receives your IP address and basic browser information when you visit, so that it can deliver the pages and protect the site from attacks.
11. If you live outside the UK
We apply this policy to everyone, wherever they live. We don't sell or share personal information for advertising, as those terms are used in US state privacy laws. If you live in the European Union, you have the same rights described in section 7 under the EU GDPR. You can also complain to the data protection authority in your country.
12. Changes to this policy
We'll update this page when our practices change, and change the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll also tell you in the app before it takes effect.
